Two-Day Python Programming Course for GCSE and A Level

CPD courses for ICT teachers of to equip you with the skills and confidence to teach, in an interesting and engaging way, the GCSE and A-Level CS curriculums, including the programming content and skills required for approaching examination questions as well as the non-examination assessment.

IF BOOKING FOR ONE DAY ONLY, THE CHARGE IS £150 (TWO DAYS = £270)

GCSE CPD COURSE:

Day 1 - GCSE overview and understanding programming
Overview of the GCSE concepts and assessment criteria
Variable assignment, data types, selection, and iteration
Creating user interfaces, validation, formatted output
Use of functions with global and local variables

Day 2 - Advanced skills: identifying the key characteristics of student success at GCSE
Advanced Python: file writing, list manipulation, string slicing and dictionaries
Examples of sample assessment material from different exam boards

Delegates will each work at a computer and receive collective and individual tuition throughout the day. This is a practical training course that will help you teach GCSE computing.

A-LEVEL CPD COURSE:

This course is aimed at those who are thinking of offering AS and A2 Computing for the first time. It will show and highlight the key skills involved at delivering the A Level, as well as the progression of the techniques from GCSE CS to the top end of the A2 course.

Day 1 - Starting out

Recap of programming skills in GCSE
How to set out effective pseudocode
Use of string slicing and Boolean operators for validation
Functions / subroutines and parameter passing
11:15 – 11:30 Break
11:30 – 13:30 Session 2 Session 2 Moving into A-Level country (nested lists, dictionaries) List slicing, sorting, passing to functions 13:30 - 14:15 Lunch
14:15 – 16:30 Session 3 Flat file database structures Reading and writing CSV files, records and fields, interacting with spreadsheets 15:00 – 16:30 Session 4 Finishing off Day 1

Day 2 - Moving deeper into A Level
09:30 – 11:15 Session 1
Developing your user interface
Introduction to Tkinter (how to add forms, screens, buttons, radio and check buttons, text boxes, labels, combo boxes and list boxes)
11:15 – 11:30 Break
11:30 – 13:30 Session 2
How to write to relational databases
SQL with Sqlite, queries: selection, update, insert, and delete, primary and foreign keys and setting up relationships
12:40 - 13:20 Lunch
14:15 – 16:00 Session 3
Object Orientated Programming
Class definition, object instantiation, inheritance, polymorphism
16:00 – 16:30 Session 4
Approaches to the coursework and questions in common with exam boards

There are two teachers on these courses, both of whom have extensive experience of teaching Computer Science at GCSE and A Level. They are extensively involved with a major examinations board, providing resources, training, assessment and examinations.

Darren Travi -
Darren is Head of Computing at the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe. A CAS Master Teacher, he leads the Buckinghamshire CAS Hub. He’s been teaching A-Level Computer Science since the 1990s and GCSE Computing since the course started in 2010. He has successfully delivered a series of CPD events aimed at supporting teachers at all levels in Primary and Secondary schools.

Ilia Avroutine -
Ilia teaches Computer Science at the Royal Grammar School. He has taught A-Level Computer Science for five years, having previously taught computing in Canada. He co-leads the CAS Bucks Hub and has run a number of training events around the country. Ilia has a wide experience of teaching computing and has co-authored the new KS3 Computing textbook for Hodders.
