Two -Day Python Programming Course to GCSE

Teaching skills for the GCSE Computer Science curriculum, 

This CPD will equip you with the skills and confidence to teach in an interesting and engaging way, up to the top end of the GCSE Computer Science curriculum and on toward A-level. It will give you strategies to prepare your pupils to start their A-Level coursework. The course will start at the beginning, looking at programming involved at Key Stage 3, before moving onto the more demanding aspects of GCSE and into the start of A Level.

Day 1 - GCSE overview, and understanding programming 
Input / output and assignment
Selection and nested selection
Iteration and looping constructs – while and for loops
Overview of the GCSE concepts, assessment criteria
Developing applications in Python

Day 2 - Advanced skills - identifying the key characteristics of pupil success at GCSE 
Creating user interfaces, validation, formatted output
Lists, data manipulation
Advanced variable assignment, data types, selection
String manipulation vs list operations
Use of functions and passing parameters
Advanced Python: data storage and persistence

Course Leaders:

There are two teachers on this course both of whom have extensive experience of teaching Computer Science at GCSE and A Level. Ilia and Darren are extensively involved with the a large examination board, through the providing of resources, training, assessment and examinations.

Darren Travi
Darren is Head of Computing at the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe. He is also a CAS Master Teacher and leads the Buckinghamshire CAS Hub. He has been teaching A-Level Computer Science since the 1990's and GCSE Computing since the course started in 2010. Darren has been an active and leading member of Computing At School and has successfully delivered a series of CPD events aimed at supporting teachers at all levels, primary to secondary.

Ilia Avroutine
Ilia teaches Computer Science at the Royal Grammar School. He has taught A-Level Computer Science since 2008, having previously taught Computing in Canada. Ilia co-leads the CAS Bucks Hub and has run a number of training events around the country. he has a wide experience of teaching Computing and has co-authored the new Key Stage 3 Computing textbook for Hodders.

All materials and resources used on this course will be made available to all delegates after the course.
