What Is Shona Stone Carving?
Shona sculpture is one of Africa’s most celebrated artistic traditions, originating with the Shona people of Zimbabwe. Using stones such as soapstone, verdite, springstone, and opal stone, artists carve expressive forms that reflect spirituality, everyday life, mythology, and emotional connection. Renowned for their smooth finishes and evocative shapes, Shona sculptures have captivated collectors and galleries worldwide—offering a deep link between artist, material, and land.
What to Expect
Over Saturday and Sunday, you’ll explore the foundations of Shona stone sculpture—from selecting and understanding the stone through to carving, shaping, and finishing your own piece to take home. Brian guides you through each stage with demonstrations, individual support, and stories from his cultural and artistic heritage.
