Description

Free to member institutions, this two-day training will run over two days, 9.30-4.30pm on the Friday and 9.30am-3.30pm on the Saturday.

TRAINING CONTENT

The two-day training will cover the following essentials of community organising:

  1. Self-interest – Why and how to communicate self-interest, do 121s, listen for issues affecting people in your institution
  2. Issues – How to present your institution’s issues and work with others to prioritise issues in a broad-based organisation
  3. Research – How to research common issues, analyse the interests of relevant power-holders and plan SMART campaign goals
  4. Negotiation – How to generate turnout and negotiate with power holders
  5. Action – How to understand different cultures and organise a public action
  6. Evaluation – How to evaluate, celebrate, reflect on power and leadership, develop a habit of action.

LUNCH & REFRESHMENTS

Lunch and refreshments will be provided on both days, including halal and vegetarian options. Please let the Community Organiser know of any dietary requirements. Lunch on the Friday will be scheduled to allow time for Muslim prayers.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

Following the two-day training, participants are invited to practice community organising for approximately 40 hours over the following six months, culminating in a 5-minute presentation at a Grudation event on Saturday 14th September 9.30am-12pm, where certificates of course completion will be awarded. To support this process over the six months, each participating trainee will be allocated a mentor from Citizens:mk Leadership Group for four 45-minute meetings and invited to attend three Action Learning Sets on Saturdays 9.30am-12pm on 27th April, 8th June and 13th July 2019.

CHARGES

The two-day training and follow-up activities are free for at least one individual from each Citizens:mk member institution (more depending on the total number registering). For other organisations, the following charges (payable by cheque or BACS) apply:

  • £50 for charities registered in Milton Keynes
  • £150 for charities outside Milton Keynes
  • £250 for other organisations.

There are no entry requirements beyond a willingness to participate in the learning activities and apply the learning to a community leadership challenge, project or campaign within the member institution over a three month period.
