This workshop is open to qualified counsellors/psychotherapists, social workers, nurses, doctors etc.
About the Workshop
"Anxiety disorders are abnormal states in which the most striking features are mental and physical symptoms of anxiety, occurring in the absence of organic brain disease or another psychiatric disorder” (Cowen 0et al, 2012).
Lucia Hall has for a long time been interested in the topic of anxiety and its disorders. Feedback from students, supervisees, and fellow counsellors and psychotherapists revealed how concerned these people were that they were often unhappy with the outcomes they were getting from their approach. This course was developed to address this and to give practitioners a more thorough understanding of anxiety disorders, including assessment and treatment.
The Biopsychosocial model is, by its name and nature, integrated. To this approach Lucia will add many interesting and exciting aspects taken from CBT, Multimodal Therapy, Mental State Examination procedures, and treating some of the frequent comorbidities.
While all of the symptoms of anxiety can arise in any of the anxiety disorders, there is a typical pattern of symptoms in each disorder. The disorders have much in common in their clinical presentations and aetiology, but there are also significant differences:
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): the anxiety may vary in its intensity, but it is continuously present
Phobic Anxiety: the anxiety is intermittent, arising only in particular circumstances, but is usually quite intense
Panic Disorder: the anxiety is intermittent, but its occurrence is not dependent on any particular circumstances
The course will be held on two days and will cover the following topics and more:
- Identify the epidemiological factors involved in anxiety
- Describe the clinical presentation of anxiety disorders
- Changes in DSM-5 related to anxiety
- Describe the clinical features of Agoraphobia, Social Phobia, Specific Phobias, and Panic Disorder (both with and without agoraphobia).
- Identify some important elements of differential diagnosis for Anxiety Disorders – how do you know which is which?
- Identify the aetiological (causal) factors involved in anxiety using the biopsychosocial model
- Construct a Multimodal Second Order Modality Profile for Anxiety Disorders
- Discuss the relationship between anxiety, depression and trauma
- Discuss assessment, treatment, and maintenance strategies from a Biopsychosocial viewpoint.
