Details

We’ll start a scenic countryside walk through one of Kent’s most beautiful landscapes. Our route begins in the historic deer park of the NT–owned Knole House, before winding through gentle fields and wooded paths. From here, we descend into newly coppiced woodland leading to the rare moated manor house of Ightham Mote (pronounced “I-tam”), also managed by the NTt, where we’ll pause for lunch. After lunch, we’ll take in the true highlight of the walk: a breathtaking stretch of the Greensand Way, climbing gradually up the Kent Downs escarpment with panoramic views across the Weald to the south. The walk concludes with a return through Knole Park, offering an optional visit to Knole House and another chance to see its famous deer. This hike is particularly rewarding in autumn, when the woods come alive with rich leaf colour. Golden beeches, sweet chestnuts, and a mix of other native trees paint the landscape in glowing shades, with chestnuts scattered along the paths to mark the season.

Hike Highlights

  • Knole House: Built in the 15th century, famously said to have a room for every day of the year. Visited by Elizabeth I in 1573, later granted to Thomas Sackville; remained in the Sackville family and was the childhood home of Vita Sackville-West, inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s Orlando.
  • A rare Tudor and medieval moated manor house with beautiful gardens.
  • Autumn Colours along the way
