Event description

Description

In the last decade of J.M.W.Turner's life, when his powers were at their height, there was a very small group of favoured collectors of his work. Among these were two remarkable men, Elhanan Bicknell and Benjamin Godfrey Windus, representative of the new breed of collectors from the commercial world of London. They bought some of Turner's most beautiful works in oil and watercolour. They were friends of both Turner and of John Ruskin, the bicentenary of whose birth is commemorated this year (among other events there is a free lecture at the Victoria & Albert Museum by its director at lunchtime on 20 November). The talks, by Marcus Bicknell and Margaret Burr, are by people who have a special knowledge of their subjects. The event, which includes wine, is free, but financial contributions to the organisers, The Independent Turner Society, will be appreciated.
