Descriptive writing is one of the writing tasks that is popularly set in 11 Plus tests and entrance exams for both grammar and independent schools alike. Interestingly, this is also tested in GCSE English Language papers, so the ability to write descriptively is an essential part of a child’s compulsory learning requirement.

Unfortunately, it is one of the areas that many children struggle with, but it is an essential skill for 11 Plus tests and entrance exams. The ability to paint a vivid picture in the reader’s mind’s eye and awaken their senses is what gets the top marks.

How the Descriptive Writing Workshop Works

This Two-Week Descriptive Writing Workshop is a taught course, using tried and tested techniques that will equip each child with the fundamental principles and components required to write an engaging, descriptive writing piece.

Each student will be given a workbook containing several descriptive writing tasks from grammar and independent school past papers, from which they will sharpen their descriptive writing skills.

The sessions will be interactive, enabling children to share and check ideas. And most of all, it will be highly enjoyable and lots of fun. For children who don’t enjoy writing, this Two-Week descriptive Writing Workshop will ignite their passion for writing, as it is taught in a very different way to the classroom. And it works!

Will there be set homework?

Yes. Homework will be given to students and will be marked. Detailed written feedback will be given to both students and parents.

How many children will there be in the workshop?

The workshops are small, with a maximum of 10 children for the course. A smaller group is not as interactive, and any larger than ten means that children don’t get the individual focus they need.

What is descriptive writing?

Descriptive writing is a piece of composition that describes a person, a place or a thing (an animal, a season for example).

When you write a descriptive piece, you must remember that you are the reader’s eyes, ears, nose, hands, and mouth. In other words, you must describe the impact that what you see and do has on the senses. For example, if you drive past a chip shop, let the reader feel as though they can smell the chips, salt and vinegar, and so on.
