Some of the best traditional bands in Irish music are booked to perform across a whole weekend as part of the 32nd Tyneside Irish Festival (13th to 21st October) in Newcastle upon Tyne.
There will be a fantastic double bill on the Friday night (19th) from Buttons and Bows with the amazing Jackie Daly ( box), Seamus and Manus McGuire ( fiddles) and Garry O’ Briain ( guitar/mandocello), one of the classiest bands around, followed by the mighty Back West, who spend a lot of time performing in the US but are relatively unknown as a band in the UK, in fact it’s their debut, but individually have an incredible pedigree with their members having played with Eddi Reader, the Riverdance show band, Arty McGlynn and Cathal Hayden. Their bodhrán player was a dancer with Lord of the Dance too so expect some stepping. Session players are welcome to have a tune after the gig.
Ye Vagabonds take the Saturday night (20th) spot with their close harmony take on traditional songs and their own compositions. These two brothers from Carlow have been making a big impression across Ireland and the World for a while now. Harpers Fiana Ni Chonnail and Lizzie Affolter support.
Sunday night (21st) is the finale of the festival with the great tenor voice of Kevin Morrin from Kildare with his band performing songs of The Dubliners’ Luke Kelly and many more of the great Irish ballads.
The full festival listings including singer Frank McCaffrey, lecture, drama, talks and family day are available on the website.
