Entrepreneurship for Researchers

Part of: Career Development for UCL Researchers programme

Are you interested in developing entrepreneurial skills to enhance your career?

This course will help you to recognise and develop the entrepreneurial skills used by researchers every day. The course will look at skills that have a broader appeal and impact than just research. These skills can be used, for example, to enhance the public understanding of your field as well as in helping you to engage with business. Or even in helping you to start your own business!

The course will:

  • Explore the changing landscape of research with entrepreneurship in mind
  • Focus on entrepreneurial skills, which are used in research and
  • Support you to build confidence in your own entrepreneurial abilities.

Format (duration, etc.)

A part-time course, you will need to attend each of the three days to complete the programme. There will also be the opportunity for you to join an online group coaching session with all participants, a week after each course day. You will need approval from your supervisor to attend the course.

Programme Dates: 20 Feburary, 27 February and 6 March (all Tuesdays)

About the course

This programme will assist you in recognising and exploring the entrepreneurial skills you use in research. On the first day, there will be an overview on the changing research landscape and also a discussion on the entrepreneurial activities that researchers are involved in every day.

The course will centre on improving abilities in five key traits of an entrepreneur:

  • Persuasion
  • Leadership
  • Personal accountability
  • Goal orientation and
  • Interpersonal skills.

Learning Outcomes

After attending the programme, you will be able to:

  • Build and/or develop your own entrepreneurial skill set
  • Use appropriate tools and techniques in each of the five entrepreneurial traits to achieve the desired outcome
  • Deal with the changing research landscape with more confidence using your entrepreneurial skills.

To apply for the programme you will need to register your details with us here and answer a series of short questions about what you will achieve through attending and how this course will benefit your current role or future career.

The deadline to apply is: Tuesday 6 February 2018

You will need approval from your supervisor to attend the course.

This workshop is open to Research students and staff at UCL who want to learn how to enhance their entrepreneurial skills.

About the trainer

Mario Moustras is a coach and a facilitator focused on working with the researcher community. Before becoming a coach, Mario worked for the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

Mario founded Mazamo Coaching to help clients increase their performance and decision making through coaching, learning and facilitating. He is a trained business and personal coach and is a member of the International Coach Federation.

Mario is a PhD chemist, a chartered scientist & Fellow of the RSC. He has worked with scientists and engineers across Government agencies, industry and universities. Mario has led teams in science related programmes in higher education, enterprise partnership (especially with small companies) and technology policy.
