Salvete, amici!

Are you curious about learning to speak Latin? Have you ever aspired to compose your own Latin in the elegant prose of Cicero, the abbreviated style of Pompeian graffiti, or somewhere in between?
Whether you have been studying Latin for 1 year or 10, we invite you to bring your curiosity, experience, and enthusiasm to an innovative workshop in Latin as a living language!

The UCL Department of Greek and Latin is hosting a two-day workshop for UCL students and appreciators of Latin from across disciplines. The event will be run in English, and will combine exercises in Latin recitation, composition, and conversation. Together we will explore a range of immersive methods for engaging with Latin, and reflect on the potential for these approaches to foster development of grammar skills, vocabulary retention, and appreciation of the language’s relationship to Roman culture.

This event will also encourage students to bridge ancient language study with the modern day by communicating their own stories and ideas in Latin.

The workshop will feature the following activities:

-Pronunciation and recitation exercises

-Dialogue and role-play

-Written composition exercises (news bulletins, advertisements, comic sketches, etc.)

-Cooperative games

AND MORE!

This workshop is designed to accommodate a range of experience levels, although we recommend for participants to have at least an elementary-intermediate level of familiarity with Latin (a 1-year university course, or equivalent).
Participants will leave the workshop with a foundational set of resources and methods for further developing a personal, active relationship with Latin.

Spaces are limited, so please register here by 25 June 2017!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Best wishes,

The Conveners

Emily Lord-Kambitsch, Hansy Shore, Abhilash Sivaraman, Caterina Domeneghini
