The UCL Prize Lecture in Clinical Science – 5.30pm, Monday 20 September 2010

Cruciform Building, Lecture Theatre 1, UCL

Speaker: Professor Barry Marshall, Nobel Prize for Medicine 2005

Lecture Title: “Past lessons and future opportunities for Helicobacter pylori”

This annual prize lecture series has been running for 13 years but within this short space of time has rapidly become the pre-eminent series on contemporary science in Europe.  The whole event, which provides an opportunity to debate and celebrate important scientific advancements, has always been very stimulating and hugely enjoyable.

This year the Prize Lecture will be given by Professor Barry Marshall.  Professor Marshall courageously infected himself with a microscopic corkscrew-shaped organism called Helicobacter pylori in order to prove this bacteria was the cause of many chronic, painful and often disabling stomach ailments (such as ulcers and gastritis) and that these conditions could in fact be permanently cured by a short course of antibiotics, although the medical profession had previously taught that these illnesses were caused by emotional stress and dietary factors and required a lifetime of treatment.  Dr. Marshall’s discovery is recognized as one of the greatest breakthroughs in medicine since the polio vaccine and he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2005.

Programme:

5.25pm for 5.30pm        Lecture: Professor Barry Marshall, Nobel Prize for Medicine 2005

“Past lessons and future opportunities for Helicobacter pylori”

Cruciform Building, Lecture Theatre 1, Gower Street, WC1E 6BT
