We are delighted to invite you to join us at the first UCLan Centre for SME Development Business Breakfast of 2020.

Breakfast Highlights:

Brexit Update & Live Q&A

On 31January the UK left the EU. The focus is now firmly on whether the UK can negotiate a trade deal with the EU before the end of the transition period (11pm, 31 December 2020), and if so, what type of future trading relationship we can expect. We have our expert on hand to provide an update on the current situation, what could happen and an insight into what this all means for businesses. This will be followed by a live Q&A session, providing you the opportunity to field your burning questions.

We are delighted to welcome back Professor Philip B Whyman to share his expertise with you. Philip is Professor of Economics and Director of the Lancashire Institute for Economic and Business Research (LIEBR) at UCLan. He undertakes research and consultancy for government, corporations and charitable bodies, advising on various aspects of economic policy and European integration.  His most recent publications include The Economics of Brexit (Palgrave, 2018), the second edition of which is due for release later this year, and Rethinking Economic and Monetary Union in Europe (Routledge, 2018).

A Problem Shared is a Problem….Solved!

As a university, one of our key activities is to teach. However, at the Centre for SME Development we also know that research shows that, ‘‘Peers, more than teachers, inspire us to learn’. Not looking good for our lecturers!

This session is inspired by the Justice Crew and their hit song Que Sera. It’s a story about what the group went through on their journey to chart success.  We think the lyrics are also relatable to business and our Centre members.  In business, some you win and some you don’t. So, at the Centre for SME Development, we’re glad that you’re here with some friends that you know. We’re always here with a smile, saying you’re not alone.

We’ll explore what matters to you and then focus on solutions to real challenges that you are facing right now, facilitated by guest lecturer Michael Brightman.  Come along and share your stories, ideas and knowledge with each other to help everyone learn, acquire new skills and be enthused.

Michael Brightman is a lecturer in Economics at UCLan. His teaching has an emphasis on challenging assumptions, being curious and demonstrating the real world application of theory.  He’s looking forward to facilitating this session to show why you learn much more from each other than you ever will from him!
