Images of the past. Using digital 3D reconstruction methods for digital humanities research and education
Digital visual humanities subsume a wide scope of research approaches dealing with the investigation of complex visual information to answer research interests from humanities by using ICT as, for example, digital 3D reconstruction methods. Technological backgrounds, project opportunities, as well as methodological considerations for application are widely discussed in literature.
In contrast, it is a still ongoing challenge to disseminate these techniques within a wider scientific community and establish them in disciplines’ academic cultures. With this background, many research activities over the last few years have been proposed to support that dissemination process. This is done by (1) investigating scenarios and practices for employment of digital visualization methods and approaches for scientific research, (2) identifying requirements and recommendations for digital tools, and (3) developing and evaluating how to learn about and teach the use of digital visualization methods and, in particular, digital 3D reconstruction techniques in visual humanities.
Within the seminar Dr. Sander Münster will present and discuss some preliminary results as well as research perspectives emerging from his completed and ongoing research projects. There will also be opportunity for participants to share and discuss their research subjects.
Dr. Sander Münster is Head of Department at Media Design and Media Production, Technische University Dresden. The department views itself as a central contact for all aspects of media production at the TU Dresden. This includes media such as photography and film, web and interactive media as well as – in cooperation with the university marketing – print design.
During Dr Münster's work at the media center he conceptualised and leaded various projects. The scope of projects include servicing projects for multimedia content creation as well as the conduction of multimedia supported campaigns or media contests for various customers. Areas of activity include the management and coordination of numerous multimedia projects on topics like information visualization, marketing, science communication, e-learning, exhibition design and media evaluation.
