Description

Briefing Session- Using Understanding Society for Research and Policy

Raj Patel (Impact Fellow and Acting Director, Understanding Society Policy Unit) and Dr Ricky Kanabar (Senior Research Officer, Understanding Society Policy Unit) will lead a briefing session on 'Understanding Society', the UK Household Longitudinal Study. The session is open to LSBU students and staff and to external academics and PhDs.

Understanding Society, the UK Household Longitudinal Study, is a unique resource for science and policy. This briefing session will provide an insight into this powerful and accessible data resource, its design and exemplars of research projects using the data. By following the lives of all individuals within households over time, data from Understanding Society are a vital resource for understanding the causes and consequences of fundamental deep-rooted problems - such as poverty dynamics, family breakdown, moving in and out of employment, poor educational achievements, changing housing patterns, behavioural change and poor health – and the links between them.

Specific research will be presented on low income dynamics among ethnic minorities in Britain, whilst simultaneously controlling for initial conditions and non-random survey attrition. This uses Understanding Society’s ethnic minority boost sample to analyse the differences between and within the main ethnic groups. The overall Study annually collects information from all individuals in approximately (at wave 1) 40,000 households over time – across Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. It was set up by the Economic and Social Research Council, under the scientific leadership of the Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Essex. Started in 2009, its builds on the long-running British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). Amongst its many unique features is that it is not just a social and economic study but also covers health, including nurse collected objective health data.
