Content strategy careers

With the end of another year approaching fast, it's tempting to look back on what we've done career-wise and assess where we are. Are we happy...? Is there another career path that could offer greater challenges and more satisfaction...? Is now the time to make the move to the next level...?

As many of the regular attendees at our meetings will know, our sessions normally cover the more practical aspects of the content strategy discipline. But, to date, we've never looked specifically at content strategy careers. So, we thought it was about time we rectified that by taking an in-depth look at content strategy careers:

  • What does it take to get started - type of education, previous experience, etc?
  • Is there such a thing as a ‘one-size-fits-all’ content strategist any more or is a greater degree of specialism required?
  • What are some of the tips and tricks for transitioning in to content strategy, either from another content field (e.g. journalism or technical documentation) or from another discipline (e.g. IA or UX)?


We're extremely fortunate to have an all-star line-up of speakers for this session!

Steve Hutson: Founder of Superstars, a disruptive London-based firm specialising in all levels of creative, UX, digital, content and strategy staffing

Ros MacKenzie: General manager content strategy, TUI Travel PLC

Murray Cox: Associate director of content strategy, LBi

CJ Walker: Specialist recruiter in web content, digital strategy and technical communication across Europe

Rahel Anne Bailie: Content strategist, architect and CMS consultant, principal of Canadian-based Intentional Design and co-author (along with Noz Urbina) of the forthcoming book, Content Strategy for Decision Makers: Connecting the dots between business, brand, and benefits

Steve and CJ will offer their unique insights on the digital and content strategy fields from a recruitment perspective, including advice on what it takes to make the transition from another discipline or to the next level.

Murray, Ros and Rahel will discuss their career paths in to the wonderful world of content strategy, sharing insights about what it's like to work on the agency side, in-house and as a consultant, respectively. 


We're being hosted by the Internet Advertising Bureau in central London. They have an amazing space and we're really thrilled they were able to accommodate us at the last minute!

There will refreshments and plenty of time for discussion and networking, with all the speakers available after their presentations for mini mentoring sessions, before we adjourn to a nearby pub and really set the world of content to rights!
