About this event

LS/FF presents: YI-WO Dir. Thomas Campbell

10 years in the making we’re privileged to host this very special screening of Yi-Wo from celebrated visual artist and filmmaker Thomas Campbell whose seminal surf films 'The Seedling', 'Sprout' and 'The Present' catalyzed a paradigm shift in the culture that redefined and reshaped the very art of waveriding.

YI-WO is a prayer, a habitual ritualistic gaze into the depths of the vast unknowable. YI-WO is a celebration of very purposely selected forms of the connective water sliding pursuits. It's a poem, a place to be or not to be untangled. A space for your time, to possibly honour the practice, this existence and the paths potential dimensional expansive qualities.” Thomas Campbell

Featuring surfers: Ryan Burch, Alex Knost, Craig Anderson, Karina Rozunko, Joel Tudor, Nick Melanson, Lauren Hill, Dave Rastovich, Ozzie Wright, JaredMell, Trevor Gordon and Bryce Young and filmed in Fiji, Morocco, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Australia, Utah, Hawaii and California.

“A study in timeless surfing and style of the highest order…” Surfer Magazine

Shot predominantly on 16mm film by Thomas Campbell, Dave Homcy, Scott Soens, Chris Bryan and Tyge Landa among others.

Soundtrack by - Cone Cinq, Spacemen 3, Group Inerane, Tommy Guerrero (with Josh Lippi and Matt Rodriguez), Arthur Russell, Kassia Meador and Alex Knost, Duane Pitre, Ray Barbee (with John Herndon and Josh Lippi), Fuck Buttons

London Surf / Film Festival is the UK’s largest celebration of contemporary surf culture bringing to these shores the very best surf films from around the globe – a hand picked line up of premieres to inspire, excite & entertain while redefining the parameters of possibility.

Founded in 2011 by surfers and writers Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor, it began, where all the best ideas start life – around the kitchen table, in the depths of winter after a few good waves. The aim was to bring together the UK surfing tribes to share the stoke, the storytelling and the cream of surf culture. After 14 editions, some 280 film premiers, with art shows, live music, talks and a whole heap of good times, it has grown to become a gathering for the global waveriding collective.

Since 2011, we've had the privilege to work with some of the most exciting surf creatives from across the globe, hosting packed out premieres and audiences with surfings inspiring and unexpected names inc. 7x world champion Stephanie Gilmore, icon Rob Machado, big wave pioneers Paige Alms & Albee Layer, chargers Torrey Meister, Chippa Wilson & Dion Agius, explorers like Kepa Acero, Keith Malloy surf creatives including Lee Ann Curren, Alex Knost plus leading filmmakers, musicians, artists, photographers, writers & the most relevant names in surf culture

For many of the films we showcase at London Surf / Film Festival, it will be the only chance you’ll get to watch them as they were intended to be enjoyed – on the big screen, in surround sound, accompanied by a packed crowd of likeminded individuals. Surf movie releases have always been community happenings – the original “social media” experience and that is exactly what the LS/FF is all about.

London Surf / Film Festival is an Approaching Lines production.
