Event description
A discussion about the Rapid Cycle Design and Testing approach created by Dartington Service Design Lab to support learning and improvement.

About this Event

In this seminar, Finlay Green (Researcher at Dartington Service Design Lab) will discuss Rapid Cycle Design and Testing, a learning and improvement methodology that brings together elements of user-centred and science-based design, improvement methods and systems thinking.

Created by the Lab, Rapid Cycle Design and Testing is one possible solution to the bind that third and public sector organisations find themselves in around the use of data and evidence. Finlay will begin by exploring this backdrop, focusing in particular on the perception held by many of those who deliver and commission services that evidence takes too long to gather, is too focused on demonstrating impact, and not focused enough on learning. He will then go on to outline the method and the ways in which it tackles these shortcomings, followed by a brief discussion of the lessons learned from the Lab’s practical application of the method over the last year.

The Lab is keen to hear from colleagues in the field to explore (a) whether the Lab’s understanding of the problem resonates with them; (b) what experience others have in delivering rapid, iterative evaluation; and (c) how other evaluators have tackled similar challenges to those faced by the Lab in its application of the method to date. There will be multiple opportunities for attendees to reflect on these issues throughout the seminar, in the hope that we might push the conversation forward on best practice with rapid evaluation methodologies.

Dartington Service Design Lab is a service design charity that brings evidence and people together to improve children’s services. Finlay has been a researcher at the Lab for nearly three years, focusing primarily on the application of Rapid Cycle Design and Testing with the Family Nurse Partnership, a public-health home visiting programme for first-time young mothers.

Registration, with tea and coffee, will be from 3.30pm.

The main session will start at 4pm.
