Event description

Description

Learn to play the ukulele - it's small, simple and charming. It might even be the easiest instrument in the world to learn. Yes, even easier than the kazoo. Even if you've never picked up a musical instrument in your life, by the end of this ninety minute workshop you'll be playing with confidence. And you'll probably never want to put your new four-stringed friend down again. Like glitter, once the ukulele enters your life, it's hard to shake off.

During this class you’ll learn the basics of playing the ukulele, including your first chords and simple strum patterns. We'll play and sing some much-loved and well known tunes together, so bring your singing voices along with you too. Don't worry about the singing if it's not your thing, though, just join in if you'd enjoy it - we're all here to learn the ukulele, and nobody will be paying attention to what anybody's voices sound like.

This is a beginners lesson, so we'll start at the very beginning - how to hold your instrument - and won't assume any previous knowledge of music at all. We'll go at a pace everyone can keep up with, so we don't leave anyone behind. By the end of the lesson you’ll be playing at least three tunes, and you'll know enough chords to get you started, so you can go along to ukulele jam nights or join a ukulele club near you.

Your teacher, Tricity Vogue, is a cabaret performer and band leader, who's been playing ukulele for ten years, and runs iconic free monthly London ukulele night, Ukulele Cabaret. Her uke night has been going for a decade in a pub in Kings Cross, and took the Edinburgh Fringe by storm for five years in a row. Her annual ukulele workshops at the Edinburgh Fringe have won five star reviews. Tricity can't help but make her classes entertaining as well as helpful, so you're in for a fun, feel-good afternoon in her company.

"Warm, funny and an excellent teacher" 5***** (TheEdinburghReporter.co.uk)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

Ukuleles are provided on the day, but if you've got one already, do bring it along. Drop Tricity a line to let her know if you're bringing your own - it'll mean fewer for her to carry. She's very happy to tune it for you.

Song sheets will be provided, which you can take home for practice once the class has finished. Sadly, Tricity will need to take her ukuleles home with her for the next class - but if you decide you want one to keep, let her know - she has a few spares up for grabs.
