Discover the important work of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) during the Just Peace Open Day in The Hague. The IRMCT is the successor institution to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). It continues their crucial mandate of ensuring accountability for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. From The Hague, the Mechanism upholds international justice and the fight against impunity, making it a vital part of the city’s unique role as the international city of peace and justice.

After the welcoming remarks by the President of the Mechanism, visitors will be able to explore the institution’s work through guided courtroom tours, scheduled presentations, informative videos, and a range of exhibits throughout the day. This is a unique opportunity to step inside an international court, learn more about how justice is delivered on a global scale, and understand why the IRMCT’s work is essential for promoting peace, accountability, and reconciliation worldwide.

Just Peace Open Day 2025

The Hague is known worldwide as the "International City of Peace & Justice," and almost every monumental building in the city plays a role in building a more just and peaceful world.

From the Peace Palace to the International Criminal Court, from the UN International Criminal Court to the Oranjehotel National Monument, the streets of The Hague breathe history! But what actually happens behind those grand doors every day? And how do people working in The Hague help make the world a better and fairer place? That's why the Just Peace Open Day is here to find out!

For one special Sunday in September, on the International Day of Peace, Just Peace The Hague and more than 20 partners will open their doors to you for a look behind the scenes and to hear the stories of the people and history behind each institution.

If you are planning on visiting more organisations during the Just Peace Open Day, make sure to only book one session in a given time slot. Multiple bookings in the same time slot (at one or multiple organisations) made by the same individual will be cancelled.

Beschrijving van evenement

Ontdek het belangrijke werk van het United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) tijdens de Just Peace Open Day in Den Haag. Het IRMCT is de opvolger van het Joegoslavië-tribunaal (ICTY) en het Rwanda-tribunaal (ICTR). Het Mechanisme zet hun cruciale mandaat voort: het waarborgen van verantwoording voor genocide, oorlogsmisdaden en misdaden tegen de menselijkheid. Vanuit Den Haag draagt het IRMCT bij aan internationale gerechtigheid en de strijd tegen straffeloosheid, en vervult het een essentiële rol in de positie van Den Haag als internationale stad van vrede en recht.

Na de welkomstwoorden van de President van het Mechanisme krijgen bezoekers de kans om het werk van de instelling te ontdekken via rondleidingen door de rechtszaal, geplande presentaties, informatieve video’s en diverse tentoonstellingen gedurende de dag. Dit is een unieke gelegenheid om binnen te stappen in een internationale rechtbank, meer te leren over hoe wereldwijd recht wordt gedaan, en te begrijpen waarom het werk van het IRMCT van vitaal belang is voor het bevorderen van vrede, verantwoording en verzoening.

Just Peace Open Dag 2025

Den Haag staat wereldwijd bekend als de ‘Internationale Stad van Vrede & Recht’, en bijna elk monumentaal gebouw in de stad speelt een rol in het bouwen aan een rechtvaardiger en vreedzamer wereld.

Van het Vredespaleis tot het Internationaal Strafhof, van het Internationaal Strafhof van de VN tot het Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel, de straten van Den Haag ademen geschiedenis! Maar wat gebeurt er eigenlijk elke dag achter die grote deuren? En hoe helpen mensen die in Den Haag werken de wereld beter en eerlijker te maken? Daarom is er de Just Peace Open Dag om daar achter te komen!

Voor één speciale zondag, rond de Internationale Dag van de Vrede, in september openen Just Peace Den Haag en meer dan 20 partners hun deuren voor jou om een kijkje achter de schermen te nemen en verhalen te horen van de mensen en de geschiedenis van elke instelling.
