Event description

Description

Workshop Details:

During the workshop participants will learn the skills needed to technically, safely and dramatically perform acts of dramatic violence with a partner. From learning how to slap, punch, kick, grapple and strangle one another in the morning, participants will progress from basic one-move techniques to performing phrases of choreography that will challenge them to tell the story of the conflict to an audience, focussing on character intention and a truthfulness of action. This workshop is open to people of all ability levels and no prior training is needed (although if you have recent stage combat training, you will still benefit from this workshop that offers a refresher in your training and approach as well as the opportunity to play with angles, fight rhythms and more complex choreography).

Kiel O’Shea is a Stage Combat instructor with the British Academy of Dramatic Combat, the longest established training organisation for dramatic violence in the UK. Kiel graduated from De Montfort University Leicester with a 1st class BA Hons in Drama Studies, before going on to do a Masters in Acting from Arts Educational Schools London. He worked as an actor-combatant for several years before turning his sights to fight direction and teaching stage combat.

Since completing the BADC’s extensive teacher training programme, Kiel has taught at many Drama Schools, including East 15, Mountview, Rose Bruford and Arts Educational Schools, London. He runs workshops and accredited courses for adults and young people throughout the UK for universities, colleges, schools and performance academies. Kiel’s fight direction credits include A Clockwork Orange and Fiddler on the Roof (both at Curve Theatre) and Dry Land (Jermyn Street Theatre). Alongside his work as a Stage Combat teacher and Fight Director, Kiel works as a Historical Combatant for palaces such as the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Dover Castle.

Kiel has several BADC accredited courses coming up in the new year. For information on 2019's courses, check out http://www.kieloshea.com/
