Event description
A one-day colloquium that concludes the Material Encounters Research Cluster's Art as a Practice of Research series.

About this event

An artist’s working process is a hidden yet significant journey because it is where ambiguous and uncertain knowledge(s) are given the opportunity to be discovered through materiality and encounter. The artist’s process itself is a highly valuable practice of research, actively enabling intuition, self-reflection, the synthesis of ideas and the unknown to be explored in flux.

This one-day colloquium seeks to provoke dialogues across practices to examine the possibilities and unknowns of the processes and matter as a critical meeting point between thought, intention, and the expectance of what might transpire.

What happens when the outcome is not the goal?

How can we conceptualise artwork in flux as research?

Can the artist’s process that is unformulated, communicate research beyond words?

We are delighted that our Keynote Speaker will be Dr Emma Cocker, delivering a talk Towards an Attitude of Openness: Preparing for the Unexpected. Our full list of presenters will be announced shortly.

This event will be delivered via the Zoom online platform. Registration is essential and all registered participants will be sent a link 2-3 days before the event goes live. Places are available for BCU staff and students (booking must be made using a valid BCU email address) and a number of General Admission tickets will be on sale in order to broaden accessibility to academic events and to encourage wider participation (please note Eventbrite adds 20% VAT to the ticket cost). Any queries please email: material.encounters@bcu.ac.uk
