Description

Unconferencing the Unconference

Friday 20th January 2017, 9:30-16:00
The Bond Company, Birmingham,
180-182 Fazeley St, Birmingham B5 5SE

This one-day unconference will explore the opportunities enabled by the unconference format as a user-generated method of learning and knowledge sharing.

The event will bring together practitioners in the public, private and third sectors, academic researchers, unconference organisers and participants to share their experiences and discuss the advantages, challenges and potential impacts associated with unconferencing.

Attendees will hear from Daniel King, Nottingham Trent University and Emma Bell, Keele University, about their British Academy research project on ‘Unconferences as a Learning Methodology’. Unconference organisers will then share advice on running unconferences in healthcare, local government, education and other sectors via a Pecha Kuchaformat. This will be followed by unconference pitching and sessions.

The principles of unconferencing – whoever comes are the right people, law of two feet and non-hierarchical communication – will inform all sessions. Sessions organised by participants may include group discussion on a common interest, organised panel discussions, solution-focussed groups, poster displays, guided debate on a controversial topic, solicited feedback on an organisational initiative and idea brainstorming. You can be creative with session content and format. Note taking facilities will include post-its and flipchart paper and colour markers and all session spaces have projection equipment.

Potential topics for sessions include but are not limited to:

  • I’ve never organised an unconference before, where do I start?
  • Who benefits from unconferences?
  • How to measure the success of an unconference?
  • How do I maximise opportunities for learning and knowledge sharing?
  • Amplifying and ensuring longevity of unconference activities – what works? and what doesn’t?
  • The unconference survival kit – what’s in it and why you need one
  • Unconference sponsorship and commercial activities – getting the balance right
  • Planning a venue and layout for unconferences
