Unconscious Bias
Event Information
About this Event
Creating a diverse, welcoming and inclusive environment is everyone’s responsibility. It is key to delivering our Trust Values and continuously driving our organisational success and effectiveness. A diverse workforce where colleagues feel valued and enabled to reach their full potential has a positive impact on everyone; in turn improving innovation and decision-making as well as meeting the needs of the diverse population we serve.
This workshop is for all staff and has been organised by the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team. A guest speaker, David Shosanya, will talk about unconscious bias.
An awareness of unconscious bias has significant impact on the way we think about ourselves and each other when we explore issues of equity, equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. This workshop will build on that awareness by drawing on insights as well as examine the way in which race, class, gender, age, disability sexuality, etc overlap and affect individuals and communities - as well as explore what further steps we need to be taking, beyond increasing personal awareness and changing our language, to bring about cultural changes that intentionally create a working environment that is an equal playing field for all.
What to Expect:
• understand the different forms of unconscious bias.
• be aware of your personal biases and recognise how they inform the way you see ‘reality’ and make decisions.
• appreciate that unconscious bias is both individual and institutional in nature.
• be able to recognise that, intended or not, unconscious bias can have a detrimental effect on others both personally and professionally.
• learn strategies to reduce unconscious bias and improve fairness, equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the organisation.
