Event description

Description

This event is being co-hosted by Deputy Presiding Officer Linda Fabiani MSP and sponsored by Maree Todd MSP, Minister for Childcare and Early Years

The 'UNCRC in Scotland' seminar series

From February to June 2017, Together held a seminar series in partnership with the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships (CRFR) and the Centre for Child Wellbeing and Protection (CCWP) on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) across Scotland in law, practice and policy. The seminar series was funded by the Scottish Universities Insight Institute (SUII).

Access the SUII seminar series materials here.

The mural

To ensure that children played a key role and that the seminar messages were accessible, the SUII team organised a creative project through the Children's Parliament. Two fantastic artists, Joanna and Yonnie, worked with pupils at Sciennes Primary School over three days to present the seminar's key findings. Ideas for the mural were informed by members of the Scottish Youth Parliament and the Glasgow Youth Council, who played an integral role in the series.

Sciennes Primary pupils created a large mural of seven panels which depicts how they see the issues that affect children and young people. The mural takes us on a journey; it begins with "The Policy Factory" where adults make rules and decisions as they debate and discuss how those policies will affect children. It also shows children on the outside looking in, unable to have their voices heard. Finally, the mural arrives at where we would like to be in Scotland - the "Meadow of Rights" in which children and young people are included and listened to.

The exhibition reception

This reception provides an opportunity to bring together the third sector, the public sector, academia, Ministers, government officials and children and young people to celebrate the UNCRC mural created by Sciennes Primary pupils. The children will explain each of their panels and the rights gaps and protections they represent. Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament and Glasgow Youth Council - Suki Wan MSYP, Joel Meekison and Thomas McEachan MSYP - will introduce the mural in relation to their experiences throughout the SUII seminar series.

The event will recap on the findings of the seminar series on the UNCRC throughout law, practice and policy and encourage attendees to consider next steps in implementing children's rights in Scotland. Maree Todd MSP, Minister for Childcare and Early Years, will reflect on the core message of the mural of embedding children's rights into decisions made across Scottish Government.

The SUII team would like you to join us to celebrate the UNCRC mural on Wednesday 13th 2017 at the Scottish Parliament. We encourage all those interested in attending to register as soon as possible. Places will be allocated closer to the event.

Canapés and soft drinks will be provided!
