Event description

Description

Under the Covers is an illuminating series of talks in which Ella Berthoud, bibliotherapist and co-author of The Novel Cure: An A-Z of Literary Remedies puts an author, artist or person of note onto the couch, and asks them all about the books that made them – what they read as a child and a teenager, what they read now - and all about their lives and what they have just been writing, painting or performing.

Patrick Gale was born on the Isle of Wight in 1962. He studied at Winchester College before reading English at New College, Oxford. In 1988 he moved to Cornwall where he lives with his husband, the farmer and sculptor, Aidan Hicks, on their farm at Land’s End.

In addition to his latest, Take Nothing With You, which was his fourth Sunday Times bestseller, his novels include Little Bits of Baby (1989), The Cat Sanctuary (1990), The Facts of Life (1995), Tree Surgery for Beginners (1998), Rough Music (2000), A Sweet Obscurity (2003), Friendly Fire, Notes From an Exhibition (2007), The Whole Day Through (2009), A Perfectly Good Man (2012) and A Place Called Winter (2015). There are also two collections of short stories, Dangerous Pleasures (1996) and Gentleman’s Relish (2009). In 2017 his Man in an Orange Shirt was screened by BBC2 as part of the Gay Britannia season and continues to be broadcast regularly around the world, it won an International Emmy for best miniseries.

Ella will prescribe books to the guest according to their ailments and needs. Audience members are encouraged to join in with recommendations and questions for the guest. This year we will have fantastic guests including Patrick Gale, Natalie Haynes, Ben Miller and Nina Stibbe, and many more!

Under The Covers is a monthly event running until December 2019.
