Step into the depths of history—and possibly the future—at Barnton Bunker, Scotland’s iconic Cold War-era nuclear bunker, for a Fallout-worthy mushroom-growing workshop like no other. Whether you’re here to master the art of fungi cultivation or preparing for the inevitable collapse of civilisation, this is the perfect place to hone your survival skills (and grow some delicious mushrooms while you’re at it).
Because let’s face it—if the world ends, you’ll want more than just canned beans in your bunker pantry.
What You’ll Do:
- Learn how to grow mushrooms outdoors .
- Create straw pellet fruiting blocks to take home and cultivate your own oyster mushrooms.
- Inoculate hardwood pellets with lion’s mane mushrooms for a gourmet addition to your wasteland survival kit.

Built in the 1950s, this Cold War-era nuclear bunker once served as a top-secret operations hub during one of history’s most tense periods. Today, it stands as both a relic of the past and a potential blueprint for the future.
Accessibility Notes:
Unfortunately, there is no level access to the workshop space. A minimum of six steps must be navigated to enter. If you have accessibility needs, please contact us at somefunguysmushrooms@gmail.com.
Please note that there are no wheelchair accessible restrooms located near the entrance of the bunker. The restrooms located on the tour route are also not wheelchair accessible. We apologise for any inconvenience.
The tour involves navigating steep steps and stairs and walking on uneven terrain. Visitors with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, may find the tour challenging or inaccessible. This workshop is best suited for adults and teenagers (16+). If you’d like to bring younger children, please contact us first to discuss.
You’ll take home your own straw pellet fruiting blocks for growing oyster mushrooms and hardwood pellets inoculated with lion’s mane mushrooms. You’ll also leave with the knowledge to grow your own mushrooms at home!
The mushroomn growing workshop will run for approximately 3 hours, then 1 hour for the bunker tour, and then time for food and chats.
Yes! The workshop will conclude with a delicious mushroom-based dish made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, which will be Vegan and NCGI.
You’ll work with oyster mushrooms and lion’s mane mushrooms, two popular and beginner-friendly varieties.
The bunker is underground, so it can be cooler than above-ground spaces. We recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater for comfort.
The bunker tour is guided as part of the workshop, but there will be time to ask questions and explore specific areas with your guide.
Yes, photography is encouraged! Feel free to capture your experience, but please avoid using flash during the bunker tour to preserve the atmosphere.
Yes, we’ll have a small selection of mushroom-growing kits and supplies available for purchase at the end of the workshop.
