Event description

Description

Hestia supports the majority of victims of modern slavery in London.

In 2017, we saw an almost 30% rise in the number of victims totalling over 900 adults and children. With this second report in the Underground Lives series, Hestia will shed light on the needs of women who have become pregnant whilst being victims of modern slavery. The impetus for this report was that a disproportionately high number of women who have been victims of modern slavery present into our service pregnant, often very late in their pregnancy, without ever having seen a health professional. This includes women experiencing acute mental health problems related to their trauma, as well as other complicating health conditions such as HIV and FGM. With this report, we hope to shed light into the needs of this very vulnerable group.

The event will include a panel discussion including Yasmin Waljee OBE, International Pro Bono Director at Hogan Lovells and Advisory Panel Member to the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Janet Fyle MBE, Professional Policy Advisor at The Royal College of Midwives and Hestia’s Modern Slavery Response Team. The event will be chaired by Alexandra Topping, senior reporter at The Guardian

Hestia has used data from 147 modern slavery victims who presented pregnant into our service in 2017 as well as comprehensive interviews with pregnant victims. This report provides an in-depth look into the urgent needs of women who become pregnant whilst being exploited in modern slavery.
