Event Details

What would it be like to feel completely confident when you work with a person suffering chronic or complex pain? What would it be like if you felt excited at the prospect of working with people suffering because you knew you could help them? If you are reading this, then this is probably your desire. To successfully work in the field, you will need that desire.

Over the past 10 years there has been an explosion of knowledge about pain. Scientists, philosophers, clinicians and others have contributed to the advancement of our understanding. This is very exciting and provides huge hope for the millions of pain sufferers across the globe. However, the pinnacle of this knowledge remains distant from day to day practices across the globe.

The UP & Pain Coach Workshop delivers the sharp end of what we know to you. To understand pain is to create the solid foundation from where the person moves onwards. This is the key first step and the first part of the workshop. The Pain Coach element is the ‘know-how’. It is the way that individuals tap into their amazing potential for change with skills that they develop. We coach the person in pain to coach themselves to living well and meaningfully. They get back to living by living.

This is an experiential workshop. To truly coach another, you must know how to coach yourself and be practicing the skills of being well. If you want to reach your potential, this workshop is for you.

"You are helping to tackle the global pain crisis and support the next generation of clinicians

Each paid workshop will be funding an Understand Pain workshop to be delivered in communities most in need. In addition, each Pain Coach course will support local undergraduates development by providing 2 free places.

Richmond Stace MCSP MSc BSc (Hons) Specialist Pain Physiotherapist

~ a little background:

I have been working with people suffering chronic pain and health issues for over 20 years. I am Chartered Physiotherapist with a background in nursing, rehabilitation and pain science. In the early 2000’s I set up the Specialist Pain Physio Clinics in London to focus exclusively on chronic pain. From my experiences and having read the Master's Degree at King’s College London in Pain Science under the tutelage of Dr Mick Thacker, I was convinced that we, the community of clinicians and therapists, could help people to understand their pain and hence take the necessary actions that would result in living fulfilled lives. This is a tenet to which I have worked ever since, and is the inspiration for UP | understand pain, which has been a pain awareness campaign since 2015, about to be launched as a social enterprise. The purpose behind all my work is to change the way in which society thinks about pain so that we cannot only reduce the suffering but also focus on living well together.
