This training course provides Personal Advisers and all practitioners supporting care-experienced young people with the knowledge and understanding needed to guide them through the process of accessing their care records. The course combines insights from research and best practice with the powerful first-hand experiences of care leavers, highlighting the emotional impact and practical challenges involved.

Duration: 3hrs (online)

Who is it for: This course is designed for Personal Advisers and all practitioners supporting care-experienced young people, including social workers, leaving care teams, youth workers, foster carers, and voluntary-sector professionals who may assist young people in accessing their care records and navigating the emotional and practical challenges of the process.

What does it cover: Participants will gain a clear understanding of the legal context surrounding access to records, learn about the key messages from research, and reflect on the personal experiences of care-experienced individuals who have undertaken this process. The course also explores strategies and tools to provide sensitive, informed support, helping young people navigate the process safely and confidently while addressing potential emotional and psychological impacts.

By the end of the training, learners will be able to explain the legal framework, understand research-informed best practices, reflect on lived experiences, and apply practical approaches to support care leavers accessing their records.
