Event description
An online course to increase knowledge and understanding of Advance Care Planning (ACP).

About this event

When approaching end of life unnecessary hospital admissions and cumbersome interventions can negatively impact quality of life for an individual with dementia with physical comfort and personal dignity being jeopardised. Advance Care Planning (ACP) can work towards addressing this issue providing a forum to express an individual’s wishes regarding treatment and preferred place of care when they are unable to do so independently, potentially avoiding unwanted and potentially unnecessary hospital admissions.

This two week learning event will increase awareness of the barriers to ACP and by doing so will arm practitioners with the knowledge to overcome these. It aims to increase skills in ACP benefitting the individual as well as ways of incorporating ACP into workflow and normalising the process being explored.

This course is best suited for clinicians, registered nurses and social work professionals who would like to gain knowledge around Advance Care Planning and associated issues such as capacity, Advance Directives and DNACPR.

The course will be split over two weeks with course materials being released on Monday via the Canvas online platform.

Learning Outcomes:

Week One

• Increase understanding of dementia; its prevalence and implications for care.

• Help identify the benefits and barriers to advance care planning.

• Promote the use of the Adults with Incapacity Act more effectively and increase awareness of how it impacts decisions in ACP.

Week Two

• Develop greater understanding of the purpose of an Advance Directive and Power of Attorney.

• Build recognition of the purpose and scope of a DNACPR
