Description

Understanding Animal Behaviour and Welfare: Do They Feel the Same As Us? - Tuesday 30th January 2018, 6:30pm - 7:30pm

About the Lecture:
This lecture will focus on our current understanding of animal behaviour and how we can use this understanding to interpret and promote animal wellbeing. It will also introduce participants to key legislations involved in responsible animal ownership. Families of all ages are welcome, but it may be of particular interest to 11 - 18 year olds who are interested in working with animals or studying Veterinary Science at university.

Doors open at 6:00pm in preparation for an expected start time of 6:30pm. The lecture should finish by 7:30pm but families are welcome to stay afterwards to speak to event organisers and current University of Surrey students.

Entry is completely free of charge and refreshments will also be provided for free.

About the Speaker:
Dr Sharmini Paramasivam graduated from University Putra, Malaysia, as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. After this, she took on a position as a Veterinarian and Enrichment Programme Coordinator for International Animal Rescue (UK), based in Indonesia. Subsequently, she became their Head Veterinarian and was in charge of all medical and surgical care of wild animals being kept at the centre. Since moving to the UK in 2015, Sharmini has become a Teaching Fellow at the University of Surrey and has delivered several lectures on animal behaviour. Her research is currently focused on behaviour medicine, which she is exploring in collaboration with the European College of Animal Welfare and Behaviour Medicine.

Getting to the Lecture:
The lecture will be taking place on the University of Surrey's Stag Hill campus. Full details will be shared via email once you have booked your space.

Free parking is available on campus. It is also possible to travel to the event by public transport as Guildford train station is just a short walk away from campus and there is a bus service which brings passengers onto campus.
