Understanding Consent in Relationships

About this Event

Introducing Dr. Betty Martin’s Wheel of Consent

In this one day workshop CICS Tutor and Psychosexual and Relationship Therapist Nicola Foster will provide an introduction to Dr Betty Martin’s model ‘The Wheel of Consent’, to help counsellors better understand the complexities of consent.

Nicola will explore how the wheel could be applied with individuals and couples in general and psychosexual therapy and will examine the importance of consent in the therapy room.

The Wheel of Consent is a powerful model to help client couples and individuals learn more about consent and boundaries. Therapists can use it to help clients find a way to practice communicating want they want and don’t want.

What is the Wheel of Consent?

On the face of it, consent can appear very simple. Yes means yes, and no means no. However, in real life, it is often far more complicated. Dr Betty Martin’s Wheel of Consent offers us a structure for understanding that complexity.

The model distinguishes between the ‘doing’ aspect of an interaction - who is doing; and the ‘gift’ aspect - who it is for, creating four quadrants of experience, which occur all the time in human relating.

It helps provide a structure to explore areas such as:

  • How we can safely communicate what we like and don’t like, want and don’t want
  • How to be open to receive pleasure or take pleasure
  • How to say and hear No

The Wheel is also a powerful tool to support rewiring neurology in recovery from trauma. As Betty Martin says, "We've all been touched in ways we didn't ask for or want". When a client has been hurt or touched in the past without choice, fear can become embedded in the nervous system. Working with the Wheel supports gentle exploration of touch with safety and relaxation.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn about a model of consent that can transform your understanding of your client and their relationships.
