Most people feel sad or depressed at times. It’s a normal reaction to loss or life's struggles.

But when intense sadness -- including feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless -- lasts for many days to weeks and keeps someone from living their life, it may be something more than sadness. It could be Depression.

Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.
