Event description
Understanding Domestic Abuse and its Impact in this 2 hr online workshop delivered on zoom.

About this event

This session is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and Essex Community Foundation.

Domestic abuse often appears in the news and across media outlets but research shows that the majority of people across communities and workplaces lack any real understanding of what domestic abuse really is, it’s impact and why it’s so complex.

This workshop explores the different types of domestic abuse, the national and regional impact of domestic abuse as well as the different laws and interventions that currently exist to combat it.

Some case studies are explored as well as research into the value of creating grass-roots training in domestic abuse across communities and workplaces that are having contact with both victims and perpetrators of abuse every day but have no understanding or skills to recognise the signs.

Organiser Alpha Vesta CIC

Organiser of Understanding Domestic Abuse and its Impact

Alpha Vesta CIC provide training and consultancy in domestic abuse for businesses and organisations across Essex.  In the UK, the Home Office calculates the national costs of domestic abuse as £66 billion including police, criminal justice system, social care, health and mental health sector costs as well as to the economy.   With 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men affected by domestic abuse at some point during their adult life and 1/3 of all violent crime in Essex being domestic related, the impact is widespread across communities and impacts directly in the workplace.  Victims and their children live in fear of what the next day will bring and their family and friends often struggle to understand why their loved one doesn’t ‘just leave’.
