A course on understanding domestic abuse and coercive, controlling behaviour typically aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Define Domestic Abuse: Understand the multifaceted nature of domestic abuse beyond physical violence, encompassing emotional, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse.
  • Explain Coercive and Controlling Behaviour (CCB): Clearly define CCB and its function as a pattern of acts intended to harm, punish, or frighten a victim.
  • Differentiate CCB from Other Forms of Abuse: Recognise the distinct characteristics of CCB, emphasising the ongoing and systematic nature of control and its impact on victim autonomy.
  • Recognise the Prevalence and Impact of Domestic Abuse: Understand the scale of domestic abuse and its devastating consequences for individuals, families, and society.
  • Identify Different Types of Domestic Abuse: Recognise various forms of abuse that may be present alongside or as part of CCB.
  • Understand Relevant Legislation and Policy: Gain knowledge of legal frameworks and policies related to domestic abuse and coercive control in their specific jurisdiction (e.g., the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 in the UK).

By completing this course, individuals will be better equipped to identify, understand, and respond to domestic abuse and coercive controlling behaviour, ultimately contributing to the safety and well-being of those affected.

**Please note that this course is being delivered with a strong health / trigger warning. We will be talking about children, young people and adults, but the course will focus on improving professional responses to sexual violence rather than the specifics of what sexual violence looks like because we recognise the risk of triggering or re-traumatising learners.**

Delivered via MS Teams in partnership with SafeLives and funded by the Welsh Government.
