Through both professional insight and personal lived experience, Marcia Brissett-Bailey will unpack the multi-layered nature of dyslexia; what it is (and isn’t), how it impacts learning, self-perception, and access to opportunities, especially for those navigating intersectional identities.

Understanding Dyslexia and SpLDs: Definitions, characteristics, myths, and the broader landscape of SpLDs in education and work.

Barriers to Learning & Inclusion: How dyslexia intersects with race, gender, and class—highlighting systemic challenges, underdiagnosis, and the emotional toll of being unsupported or misunderstood.

Practical Strategies & Tools: Strength-based approaches, inclusive learning environments, assistive technologies, and coaching techniques that empower learners and promote autonomy.

Lived Experience & Case Reflections: Drawing on my personal journey and the voices of others featured in Black, Brilliant and Dyslexic, this section aims to humanise dyslexia and emphasise the value of diverse minds.

Speakers Bio

Marcia Brissett-Bailey

Marcia Brissett-Bailey is a leading neurodiversity advocate, author of "Black, Brilliant, and Dyslexic," and Trustee of the British Dyslexia Association. Her extensive experience, including 30 years in education, is highly relevant for disability support staff in higher education.

Marcia's background includes a postgraduate qualification in Career Guidance and an MA in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. As a qualified Careers Advisor and SEND lead, she specialises in supporting neurodivergent young people through transitions to college and university.

Her personal journey navigating educational systems not designed for neurodivergent minds provides invaluable insights into the barriers students face. She passionately guides others to embrace their differences and find their voice, promoting strategies for thriving in academia. Marcia’s work emphasises the importance of self-acceptance and empowering neurodivergent individuals to reach their full potential within higher education settings.
