About this Event

Understanding Gàidhlig (Gaelic) Place Names Workshop Series with Scot AnSgeulaiche

After what significant natural feature is Crieff named and why? For what is Gleneagles named? Hint: it has nothing to do with our winged friends.

The Gàidhlig names that prior inhabitants gave to their surroundings tell us much about their relationship with the landscape, the places we now live.

These workshops offer a fantastic opportunity to understand more about the indigenous language of Scotland with local storyteller and oral-historian, Scot AnSgeulaich. Each workshop you will learn the meaning and pronunciation of local areas of interest which have a Gàidhlig name.

1. Clàs a h-aon - Mountains and Hills – Thurs 4th March

2. Clàs a dhà - Rivers and Lochs – Thurs 11th March

3. Clàs a trì - Towns and Houses – Thurs 18th March

Participants can submit names in advance of the Zoom workshop for some group detective work on the day. A map and a Gàidhlig dictionary will be useful but not essential.

Each workshop can be individually booked (£25 plus booking fee) or as a complete series of all 3 workshops for £65 plus booking fee.
