Event description
Increase your knowledge and understanding of Gender Identity and Gender Dysphoria, so that you can be a better professional ally.

About this event

Transgender (and non-binary) identity is not a mental illness, lifestyle choice, social contagion, or “debate”. Often, the transphobic culture evident in mainstream media would have us believe that it is. How does this filter through to the subconscious minds of psychologists and therapists? Does this negatively influence the therapeutic relationship? Does it increase negative outcomes? How do we ensure that as professionals we do not exacerbate the disproportionate harm done to marginalised groups?

Transgender and gender non-conforming people experience disproportionate rates of negative mental health outcomes, theorised to reflect minority stress, stigma, and discrimination. Do our cisgender, heteronormative, western cultures contribute to this? How can we reduce the likelihood of reinforcing negative outcomes through conscious or unconscious biases?

Gender Dysphoria refers to the discomfort or distress that some people feel when there is a discrepancy between gender identity and the sex assigned at birth. Sometimes, that distress leads individuals to transition, socially (e.g., through different gender expression and name changes) and/or medically (e.g., through hormone therapies and surgeries). This journey is individualised and involves a process of informed consent appropriate to the age and life stage of the individual. Transgender identity is not always linked to Gender Dysphoria.

In your professional role, being an ally does not mean you must give up your curious, questioning mind. It is perfectly natural to wonder why dysphoria affects people differently and emerges at different life stages. It is understandable that you might want to know how neurodiversity intersects with dysphoria. As a professional, you may feel worried or out of your depth at times.

In this introductory workshop:

• You will develop an understanding of transgender and non-binary identities, the negative effects of discrimination, transphobia, and minority stress.

• You will gain an understanding of Gender Dysphoria – what it is, and what it is not – and common misunderstandings about dysphoria by professionals.

• You will increase your awareness of commonly associated mental health concerns, interactions with neurodiversity, and how to optimise therapeutic outcomes.

• You will develop your confidence and skills in asking about dysphoria, using terminology and affirmative language.

• You will learn to differentiate between the boundaries of the support you can provide, and when to signpost to a specialist gender identity clinic.

• The relevance and effect of high-profile legal cases and UK legislation in relation to the care you provide clients who present with dysphoria.

• You will learn about existing pathways in the UK for those individuals who choose to explore gender affirming medical treatments.

• You will gain an understanding of gender affirming treatments, their physiological and psychological effects.

This workshop is for:

• Psychologists, therapists, psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, nurses, doctors, and other allied health professionals, who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of Gender Dysphoria in a safe, respectful, non-judgemental atmosphere.

This live 2.5 hour workshop will take place on Zoom at 9.30am on Friday 28 January 2022.

Disclaimer: This workshop is not a “how to” guide on the completion of sole practitioner psychological assessments for the purposes of providing a diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria, or for the explicit assessment of hormone treatments, and/or surgical treatments. These are highly specialised, and often multidisciplinary, assessments that should be undertaken by Gender Specialists, who have clear training, governance, and supervision structures in place. It is notable that many UK based; NHS Gender Identity Clinics will not accept assessments from individual private sector providers. It is in clear breach of ethical professional guidelines to provide assessments outside of your competency to self-funding individuals.
