Understanding Learning Disability

On completion delegates will be able to:

• To understand the historical context of learning disability services and public attitudes that bring us to the present day 2.To have a clear understanding of the term ‘learning disability’

• To understand possible causes of learning disability

• To recognise the increased prevalence of mental health problems in people with learning disabilities

• To understand the link between Downs Syndrome and dementia

• To understand the process of disempowerment

• To explore some of the key characteristics of learning disability and how these may impact on everyday life for the individual
