Training provider Economy is running this workshop for Trust for London grantees, addressing these questions and more. The same workshop will also run on 7th December, 2-5pm, so you can attend the session that fits your schedule best.

You are also invited to Economy's workshop on the causes and solutions around the housing crisis in London, which will take place on 2nd December, 2-5pm and will be repeated on 19th January, 10am-1pm.

These training sessions will explore how economic knowledge, skills and confidence can be practically applied to your work. They will also provide opportunities to share with, learn from and make connections with other groups across London.

No prior knowledge is necessary- If you feel like economics isn’t for you, then these workshops are!

Why economics and the economy?

London’s economy is a system which connects all of the issues Trust for London grantees work on - from good homes and neighbourhoods to better work, improving living standards and reducing wealth inequality.

And yet, the vast majority of people feel alienated from economics, and unable to influence the economy around them.

During the pandemic, communities have taken more responsibility for addressing the symptoms of economic insecurity, but they aren’t being given the opportunities or power to tackle its causes, many of which are rooted in the way London’s economy is organised.

This is particularly concerning because the people who are making decisions about London’s economy are often not representative of the diversity of Londoners, particularly those experiencing poverty and inequality – you are twice as likely to have studied economics if you went to private school.

What you’ll gain from this session

An introduction to the economy- learn what the economy is, and how it fits in with housing and the work you’re doing.
Deepen your understanding of problems in the job market in the UK, and explore potential solutions- we’ll focus on what’s going on in London.
Conversations: Learn how to talk about these issues with different types of people- make your campaigning more inclusive and accessible, engage a more diverse range of people in your housing work.

Accessibility

The sessions run for three hours with breaks according to the needs of attendees. There are slides with bullet points and images, and a presenter speaking, as well as time in small groups. The session also uses the zoom polling function and a similar polling function called Mentimeter.
When signing up we’ll also share a dial in number so you access the event without the internet.
Due to the interactive nature of the event, and to encourage engagement, the event will not be recorded.
We will be using live captioning.
Whilst it helps our trainers if you can have a camera on, you can also attend without.
As standard we provide a copy of the slides in advance, and can change the format of these on request if needed, for example large print or high contrast.
Trust for London are happy to arrange BSL interpreters if you let us know when you book, and have guidance for interpreters on evaluation language used we can supply. Please let us know at least 2 weeks before the training so that we can make the necessary arrangements. There is space on the order form to let us know if you have any specific access needs or adaptations we can make, to ensure you can attend. Other adaptions might include - a chat beforehand to answer any questions, materials in different formats, fonts, or font sizes, auto-captioning the event. There is someone monitoring the zoom chat function if you have any questions or problems during the session.
