Increase your understanding of the purpose and practice of paediatric post-mortem and build your confidence in communicating sensitively with parents.

Supporting the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) codes of practice, around consent, donation and post mortem.

Who its aimed at:

This training is suitable for individuals whose work brings them into contact with families after a child has died: for example, doctors, nurses, midwives, mortuary and pathology staff, health and social care staff, child death review professionals, hospice staff, faith leaders, police and coroners’ officers and all those working in a bereavement support role within the NHS. Separate training about the child death review process is also available.

Learning outcomes

  • Gain knowledge and understanding about what happens at a paediatric post-mortem
  • Increase confidence in talking to bereaved parents about post-mortem examination
  • Explore sensitive issues such as the retention of tissue
  • Recognise the importance of looking after ourselves and identify ways of supporting ourselves.

We encourage prospective participants to consider their own experience of loss and how it might affect them during training. Generally speaking, our training is not usually suited to anyone who has suffered a recent, significant personal loss or bereavement.
