Description

This is an ONS-only event, for staff on the Census and Data Collection Transformation Programme.

Understanding Parliament Workshop (Foundation)

CSL offers two full-day Understanding Parliament workshops designed to help you and your teams develop the skills and knowledge needed to negotiate Parliament, and factor parliamentary handling into your work.

Target group: This Understanding Parliament (Foundation) workshop is tailored to colleagues with little to no experience of Parliament who are in roles specific to the EU exit and/or those new to the Civil Service. The full-day course provides an overview of Parliament’s work, role, powers and processes and how this affects you as a civil servant. Please check with your line manager that this course is relevant to your role, before booking a place.

Please note: On 29 November there is a second workshop - Understanding Parliament (Practitioner). You are welcome to attend both workshops. However, to ensure the best use of your time:

  • If you have little to no prior knowledge or experience of Parliament, we would recommend attending the Foundation workshop on 22 November.
  • If you have some existing knowledge of Parliament, or will be directly involved in responding to parliamentary work on a regular basis, the Practitioner course on 29 November may be the most useful.
  • If you feel both descriptions apply, please come to both.
  • If in doubt, please contact the facilitator Daniel Wood (c/o Transformation.Learning.and.Development@ons.gov.uk for more information.

Learning Methods: Workshops have been developed and are delivered by subject-experts on secondment from Parliament, through a mixture of presentation, discussion and interactive exercises. Pre-course reading will be sent to delegates who are have registered for the event on Eventbrite, 1-2 weeks prior to the course date.

Date and Venue: Thursday 22 November 2018 in the Mini-Map room (4009), ONS Titchfield

Contact: If you have any individual requirements that need accommodating or you would want the trainer to be aware of, please contact Transformation.Learning.and.Development@ons.gov.uk in advance.

Background: Parliament impacts upon everyone in the Civil Service. Every aspect of government can be scrutinised by Parliament. The issues it raises affects the work we do and the way we do things. In recent times Parliament has become increasingly assertive in the way it holds government to account - Ministers spend more time updating MPs and Members of the House of Lords on the policies and actions of their departments, at shorter notice, and for longer periods of time. Ahead of the EU Exit in April 2019, this scrutiny will increase substantially.

It is therefore vital that we all understand Parliament. Putting these skills into practice will enable us to deliver first-rate advice and information to Ministers and provide the British public with the best services possible.

Further information on these workshops, and CSL’s full suite of Parliamentary training can be found on the Parliament specialism page on the CSL website.
