Overview

Understanding Power in Therapeutic Practice, A TaSC Seminar with Lucia Sarmiento

Questions of power dynamics are more prevalent in philosophical scholarship than in therapeutic thinking. However, impact of personal and social power on mental health and on relationships cannot be understated. When therapists avoid learning and reflecting on power, important aspects of a client’s experience may be missed, or, at worst, it can allow for harm to happen within the therapeutic relationship.

This introductory session is an attempt to translate what philosophy tells us about power in our lives in a way that is directly applicable to therapeutic work. It will provide invitations for therapists to reflect on this issue in ways that can enhance their practice.
