Abstract

Precarious and irregular migration is understood from a sociological and development studies lens, as a product of complex, interacting, social processes in both migrant-sending and migrant-receiving countries. Development agendas in the Global South often feed into the system of global capitalism via the supply of migrant labour, while so-called ‘illegal’ migrants are created through the elaborate border regimes of Western nations. This talk challenges the tendency to pathologize irregular migrants by instead focusing on the structural dynamics at play. It also unpacks and gives voice to the experience and meaning-making practices of migrants themselves, revealing how dangerous journeys are made thinkable and livable. This is illustrated via the case study of irregular Vietnamese migration to the UK - a group that been at the forefront of the ‘small boats’ debacle and concerns about migrant deaths in the English Channel.
