Event description
Understanding psychosis is a talk by a hands-on professional, who works with children providing them with medical and psychological support.

About this event

About the talk:

To say that psychosis and the diagnosis of schizophrenia are misunderstood by the public at large would be something of an understatement.

It has often been the poster-child for movies and media that suggests an extreme that is outside of normal human behaviour.

Would you be surprised to know that some estimates suggest that up to 70% of the general public will experience some of these symptoms in their lifetime? Hearing voices and seeing things isn’t out there but within each and every one of us – diagnosis is the result of being overwhelmed with the experience.

From the speaker:

My day job is working with people from 14-65 who are struggling with these symptoms. My perspective is that psychosis isn’t a separate condition but an integral part of general mental health and well-being. Understanding such a disabling mental health experience also gives us significant insights into better understood mental health experiences such as anxiety and depression.

The study of psychosis has also allowed us to understand important factors in childhood development and the potential impacts of adverse childhood events such as prejudice, divorce or bereavement.

My name is Dr Peter Neil and I work in an NHS service that provides medical and psychological support for people experiencing a ‘first episode of psychosis’.

This talk will aim to help people to understand psychosis experiences and their place within our own mental health and well-being.
