    What is Understanding Self-Harm – Tools for a compassionate and effective intervention?

    Over one in ten young person self-harms, an increasing number of adults too. The rates are amongst the highest in Europe.

    Participants in the interactive 3.5h course will leave the session equipped with a solid understanding of the contributing factors, triggers, functions and signs of self-harm, a clear and effective intervention framework to guide their support, as well as with a wide range of practical strategies they can share with someone who self-harms.

    The session uses the latest teaching methodologies, and each participant is given the link to a very comprehensive padlet online page of materials and further information about sources of support.

    What are the learning objectives?

    By the end of this session, facilitated to encourage a safe and effective learning environment, participants will be able to:

    · Explore their attitude about self-harm

    · Define self-harm

    · List contributing factors and triggers to self-harm

    · Explore the possible functions of self-harm

    · Identify possible signs that someone is self-harming

    · Use an intervention model to support someone

    · Share a range of alternative coping strategies including safety planning

    · List a range of services/apps that can be of help to people who self-harm

    · Engage in a short practice of the recommended framework using a scenario

    · Recognise the impact of working/living with people who self-harm and ways to build self-care strategies


    This course has been designed for those supporting/working with individuals who self-harm. As such, the workshop will include discussion and description of methods of self-harm and suicide. If you have been closely affected by any of these issues or feel that this may be challenging at this time, we would invite you to consider your relationship to the topic and give us a call before booking your place.


    Eligibility for a funded training place

    This training is in partnership with Mind, Brighton and Hove. To be eligible for a funded place you need to be working or living within East Sussex, with people at risk of suicide. As a guide, we offer each organisation three places per course type, per financial year. However, for larger organisations further places may be available.

    If you are purchasing on behalf of others, please ensure you have the full information for each participant as you will be asked to fill out details on booking. Please note that each purchase counts towards your organisation's yearly allocation, and that spaces are not transferable to other courses or dates.
