About this event

A workshop for parent carers accessing as part of the SPACE project in the North East and Cumbria.

Often people with additional needs have different sensory perceptions of the world and they may find it difficult to process the information they receive through their senses. Understanding your child’s sensory profile (and your own) can help with developing approaches to reduce stress and promote wellbeing; supporting all areas of life, including behaviour, communication, sleep and learning.

Sensory needs are often the reason for anyone with developmental or neurological diversity to experience anxiety. It is also the reason they may respond differently to the world, in a way that may be problematic and pose risks to themselves or to the people around them.

In any year, sensory needs, can increase anxiety at times of change and in unfamiliar settings. The COVID-19 restrictions and changes as a direct cause of this have offered the greatest challenge to those of us with developmental and neurological diversity.

This session looks at the impact of sensory needs through these challenging times on people with sensory needs, their families and the people who support them. It will look to provide an insight into the difficulties and some key strategies to support wellbeing.

This workshop will be presented by Claire Stirland of Sensory Worx. Claire is an Occupational Therapist and Sensory Integration Therapist. She has over 14 years experience in the NHS.

This session will give you an opportunity to:

• learn more about sensory processing and sensory integration

• reflect on your child’s sensory needs, and your own, and how these might change over time

• consider the impact of sensory needs on other family members/care givers and in different environments

• identify new approaches to supporting the challenges and opportunities of sensory issues

• explore how you can obtain further help and guidance if you need it

The workshop will be held on Zoom - you will be emailed joining instructions before the session.
