Event description

Description

The teenage years can be really challenging for all involved. This two day workshop is designed for anyone living or working with teenagers – parents, teachers, youth workers, employers, family members, who would like some new ideas on how to manage and understand teenage behaviour more effectively. Together we will explore ideas and strategies to support you and the teens involved through the potential conflict , chaos , and challenge at this life stage.

There will a combination of teaching and interactive exercises alongside a creative and safe space in which to share thoughts, experiences and ideas that will be useful for everyone. You will get clear, accessible handouts and a useful ‘tools, tips and strategies’ guide to take away.

Day 1
Morning: Repeating, Rebelling or Repairing? How your own experience of being a child is influencing your parenting style or the way in which you interact with teenagers. Working through what to keep and what to give up from your own past and how that will help your relationships with teenagers.

Afternoon: Understanding Teenager Behaviour. Neuroscience and the changing teenage brain. Get insight into the 'good' teenager who doesn't feel good inside. Distinguish between healthy and worrying expressions of feelings, especially anger.

Day 2
Morning: Setting and Maintaining Limits and Boundaries. Avoiding over-indulgence, the scourge of modern parenting. The pull on parents to give too much, be overprotective, be scared of letting teens take risks. Gain confidence in saying 'no' and sticking to it. Find out what are age appropriate rules/limits. Applicable also to those who work with teenagers.

Afternoon: Separating and Letting Go. Why that's hard for them and hard for us. How to encourage autonomy and independence. What they need from us to grow up.

Ideal course for: Parents, carers, teachers, grandparents, therapists who work with teenagers or anyone who lives or works with teenagers.

Course Tutor: Karen Blumenfeld is a provisional teaching and supervising transactional analyst in the field of psychotherapy. She has a therapy centre in Cheshire plus a busy private practice. Karen was a TV producer for many years making social documentaries before retraining as a psychotherapist. She has delivered parenting workshops to schools and parents since 2008 and also has 3 grown up sons.
