Understanding the Bay: Your Heritage


Documentary Research Training for Volunteers: Barrow

When: Saturday 28th January and 4th Februray 2017, 10am -4pm

Where: Venue TBC (Accessible venue-central Barrow)

Cost: FREE

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TICKET ISSUED COVERS BOTH SESSIONS ON 28TH JANUARY AND 4TH FEBRUARY. VOLUNTEERS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND BOTH SESSIONS.

Join us as a volunteer to help investigate and collect historical and archaeological information about sites around Morecambe Bay.

Over the two day-long workshops (28th January and 4th February), learn the skills required to access archaeological and historical records and documentary evidence of the Bay. This course will focus on the militray and maritime heritage of the area.

Training outline as follows:

  • Basic research skills and sources of information
  • Historic mapping/place names
  • Aerial photography
  • Landscape assessment (through optional site visits)
  • Report writing and archiving

Site visit: Please note that the sessions may include optional site visits (to be arranged). Further details will be sent prior to the training.

Subsequent archive visits, research and drop in sessions will be arranged during Winter/Spring 2017 to support volunteers in researching local historic sites for this project.

We ask that volunteers attend all sessions and help to undertake additional research for the project once you have received the training (approximately 5-10 hours in addition to the workshops).
